A Few Instructions in the Lobby

I took the children to see "Phantom of the Opera" today. The set was fantastic and the actors portrayed the continuity of the book we've been studying in class quite nicely. Barring one poor wardrobe choice on the Phantom's part during the masquerade number, the costumes also were stunning. That being said, however,  I'm not entirely sure it was the best choice. They seemed to be all too eager to exercise their special effects which, while impressive in their own right, are absolutely terrifying- especially to the children. ( I can say with certainty that at least they will not fail my quiz next week! )

"Point of No Return" is a a notoriously concerning sequence, and I was hesitant to book this trip for that reason, but as the sexual content is typically subtle in nature, I had thought it safe. THIS production was not that. The choreography was explicitly suggestive in both this number and the final lair scene with strong portrayals of rape. I found myself covering young eyes multiple times.

Overall, the students that attended were mature and seemed unfazed by the changes in this production that did leave a thing to be desired. Instead, they left spirited with eyes full of wonder. I highly recommend seeing this production.
